Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham: Spurs Beat Man United to £85m Deal for West Ham Star

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly struck an agreement to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes in a deal worth around £85 million, with the Portuguese international now set to undergo a medical before the move is finalised.

The fee would shatter Tottenham’s previous transfer record, which stood at £65 million for striker Dominic Solanke, signed from Bournemouth back in August 2024.

Manchester United Miss Out

Manchester United had also been chasing the 21-year-old and pushed hard to get a deal over the line. However, the Red Devils were not entirely convinced of Fernandes’ enthusiasm for joining them and were unwilling to pay above what they considered fair value for the player, ultimately allowing Spurs to win the race.

Why West Ham Valued Fernandes So Highly

Sources close to West Ham reportedly rate Fernandes as one of the standout young talents in the Premier League last season, drawing comparisons to Declan Rice who left the Hammers for Arsenal in a £105 million transfer back in 2023.

According to Sky Sports journalist Sam Blitz, Fernandes has built a reputation as one of the most combative ball-winners in the league, with tackling numbers that consistently rank among the division’s best. Former colleagues from his Southampton days note that his tenacious style was evident even early in his career, long before it became a defining trait of his game at West Ham.

His engine is just as impressive as his defensive work. Fernandes ranks inside the top 10 Premier League midfielders for distance covered per match, putting him firmly in the conversation as one of the league’s premier running midfielders, behind only a small handful of elite performers.

From Number 10 to Box-to-Box Enforcer

Interestingly, Fernandes wasn’t always viewed as a defensive-minded player. During his time at Southampton under then-manager Russell Martin, he was initially deployed in a more advanced, creative role. However, Fernandes himself pushed to play deeper, seeing his long-term future as an all-action central midfielder rather than a classic No. 10.

That shift paid off. At West Ham this past season, he evolved into a hybrid No. 6/No. 8, blending tactical maturity with physical intensity a combination that ultimately caught Tottenham’s eye and convinced them to break the bank.

What This Means for Spurs

If completed, the Fernandes deal will represent a major statement of intent from Tottenham heading into the new season, signaling a willingness to compete with the Premier League’s top clubs for elite young talent.
