Brentford 1-2 Liverpool: Isak Winner as Nine-Man Bees Fall

Brentford 1-2 Liverpool was a comeback win for the Reds at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. Keane Lewis-Potter headed Brentford in front just before half-time, but Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off moments later, and second-half goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak gave Liverpool all three points.

Brentford ended the game with nine men after Vitaly Janelt picked up a second yellow card in stoppage time. It was the Bees’ first league defeat of the season, and the win lifts Liverpool to fifth in the Premier League table, above the Bees.

Brentford 1-2 Liverpool: Key Facts

  • Result: Brentford 1-2 Liverpool
  • Competition: Premier League, Matchweek 7
  • Date: Saturday 17 October 2026
  • Venue: Gtech Community Stadium, London
  • Goals: Lewis-Potter 44′ (Brentford); Munoz 62′, Isak 70′ (Liverpool)
  • Red cards: Yarmoliuk (first-half stoppage time), Janelt (second yellow, second-half stoppage time), both Brentford
  • Table: Liverpool move up to fifth, above Brentford

How the Match Unfolded

Brentford started on the front foot, as they so often do at home. They won early corners, Michael Kayode had an effort deflected just wide, and Igor Thiago was a constant problem for the Liverpool back line. Jeremy Jacquet had to make an important block to stop Thiago getting a clear shot away.

Liverpool thought they had a penalty shortly before the break when Alexis Mac Allister went down under a challenge from Dango Ouattara. The referee pointed to the spot, but VAR stepped in and the decision was overturned because Ouattara had got a touch on the ball.

Almost straight away Brentford made them pay. Thiago floated a ball into the box and Lewis-Potter rose to head past Alisson for a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute.

The Red Card That Changed Everything

The momentum swung back in first-half stoppage time. After a VAR review, Yarmoliuk was shown a straight red card for a head-butting action on Jacquet inside the box. Instead of going in with a lead and a full team, Brentford had to plan for 45 minutes with ten men.

That is a huge ask against a side with Florian Wirtz, Isak and Mac Allister on the pitch, and Liverpool gradually took control after the restart.

Liverpool’s Second-Half Response

The equaliser came in the 62nd minute. Munoz broke quickly down the right, cut inside onto his left foot and drove a low shot into the bottom corner, beating Caoimhin Kelleher, the former Liverpool goalkeeper now in goal for Brentford.

Eight minutes later Liverpool were in front. A long ball from Mac Allister was headed back across goal by Bradley Barcola, and Isak finished from a tight angle to make it 1-2. Brentford still had chances, with Thiago missing a big opportunity to level, while Barcola hit the crossbar at the other end.

Janelt’s second yellow card for a trip on substitute Rio Ngumoha in stoppage time ended any hope of a late Brentford rally.

Injury Worries for Liverpool

The three points came at a cost. Dominik Szoboszlai went off injured after 32 minutes, on his return to the starting line-up, and was replaced by Trey Nyoni. Jeremie Frimpong came on at half-time but lasted only a few minutes before he too limped off, with Ngumoha taking his place.

No details on either injury had been confirmed at the time of writing, so keep an eye on the club’s official updates at liverpoolfc.com before Liverpool’s next fixtures.

What the Result Means

For Liverpool, this was a valuable away win in a ground where many sides drop points. Coming from behind, even against ten men, shows a resilience that will please the coaching staff, and Isak’s winner will do his confidence plenty of good.

For Brentford, the unbeaten start is over, and the manner of it will sting. They were the better side for long spells of the first half, and the Yarmoliuk red card cost them dearly. The positive is that they competed well with ten men and still created chances.
