Arsenal 3-0 Lille was the final score at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, as the Gunners kept their perfect Champions League record with a devastating second-half burst. After a goalless first half, Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka scored in the space of about seven minutes to settle the game. Arsenal now have six points from two matches, while Lille are still waiting for their first point.

Arsenal 3-0 Lille: Key Facts

  • Venue: Emirates Stadium, London
  • Half-time: 0-0

A Frustrating First Half

Mikel Arteta made five changes from the side that beat Leeds 2-1 on Saturday, and the rotation showed early on. Arsenal had plenty of the ball but struggled to create clear openings against a well organised Lille side.

The visitors even thought they had taken the lead in the first half when Ayase Ueda put the ball in the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. At the other end, Bruno Guimaraes spurned Arsenal’s best chance of the half from close range, Mikel Merino headed straight at Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer, and Ozer also made a smart save to deny Viktor Gyokeres.

It was a reminder that Lille, despite losing their opening game to Real Betis, are a capable side. For a long spell it looked like Arsenal might be held.

Seven Minutes That Changed Everything

Arteta turned to his bench around the hour mark, sending on Saka, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard. The effect was immediate.

On 64 minutes Noni Madueke found Timber, who turned and chipped a clever finish over Ozer from a tight angle. Minutes later, Saka delivered a low cross and Eze’s effort deflected in for 2-0. Then on 71 minutes Havertz cut the ball back for Saka, who finished to make it three.

Saka’s impact as a substitute, with a goal and an assist, was the headline for many Arsenal fans. Former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud came on for Lille late in the game, but the contest was over by then. Max Dowman also got a late run-out for the hosts.

Lille coach Davide Ancelotti felt the scoreline was harsh on his team. He said they had done well in the first half but could not cope with Arsenal’s higher tempo after the hour, which led to three goals in quick succession.

What It Means for Arsenal

Arsenal opened the league phase with a 1-0 win away at Napoli, and this result means they have six points from six. They are level on points at the top of the table with Barcelona and Sporting CP, who also won on Tuesday.

The clean sheet came despite a stretched squad. Before the game, William Saliba was still working his way back from a back problem, while Martin Zubimendi and Piero Hincapie were sidelined with ankle injuries picked up after the Leeds match. No new injuries were reported after Tuesday’s win.

The depth on show will please Arteta. Domestically, Arsenal are second in the Premier League, three points behind leaders Manchester City, so being able to rotate without losing results is vital. What It Means for Lille
