Inter Milan have agreed a £30 million (€35m) deal with Liverpool to sign midfielder Curtis Jones, bringing to an end a 16-year association that began when Jones joined the club at just nine years old. The agreement was reached late on Wednesday night, with the 25-year-old now given permission to travel for a medical.

A Genuine Liverpool Academy Success Story

Jones made his first-team debut for Liverpool during the 2018-19 season and went on to make 228 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals along the way. Across his time at Anfield, he won two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, the Club World Cup and the FA Cup, while also finishing as a Champions League runner-up in 2022 a genuinely decorated career for a player who came through Liverpool’s own academy system.

Part of a Wider England Exodus to Inter

Jones becomes the third England international to join Inter Milan during this transfer window, following the earlier arrivals of John Stones and Djed Spence a notable pattern of Premier League talent heading to Serie A this summer.

What Jones’ Exit Means for Liverpool’s Midfield

Sky Sports’ Rich Morgan notes that Jones’ departure leaves head coach Andoni Iraola with some interesting decisions to make regarding his midfield setup heading into the new season. Jones made 49 appearances under previous boss Arne Slot last season, 34 of which came during a difficult Premier League title defence, sharing midfield duties with Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch, while also frequently deployed as a makeshift right-back.

Iraola, however, has signalled he intends to use Florian Wirtz in his favoured No.10 role within a 4-2-3-1 system, which would leave Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Gravenberch competing for just two midfield spots in front of the back four. The Spanish head coach also has Wataru Endo available, along with Trey Nyoni, who has impressed notably during pre-season. With more than ten days still remaining in the transfer window, there’s a genuine possibility Liverpool could reinvest some or all of the £30 million received for Jones into a direct replacement.
