Manchester City’s preparations for the new Premier League season have been given an early reality check after a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield.
The result was more than just a disappointing loss for Enzo Maresca. Arsenal exposed several weaknesses in Manchester City’s structure, particularly through the midfield and defensive spine, raising questions about whether the squad currently has the personnel required to execute the manager’s tactical system.
Maresca had spoken about his ambition to “close the gap” between Manchester City and Arsenal, but Sunday’s defeat suggested that there is still significant work to be done.
With City’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth approaching on Sunday, the Community Shield provided Maresca with a long list of issues to address.
Manchester City’s midfield problems exposed
The biggest concern from the defeat was arguably Manchester City’s midfield.
City struggled to control the central areas despite having plenty of possession and completing significantly more passes in Arsenal’s half. The problem was not simply a lack of possession but the inability to turn that possession into meaningful control and chances.

The departure of Rodri to Barcelona makes the situation even more significant. The Spain international provided Manchester City with defensive protection, positional discipline and control in front of the defence.
Replacing those qualities will be one of Maresca’s biggest challenges.
Rodri’s departure leaves a huge void
The confirmation that Rodri will leave Manchester City for Barcelona adds another layer of urgency to the club’s midfield situation.
Rodri was arguably one of the most influential players in Manchester City’s recent success, and replacing him with a like-for-like player is practically impossible.
City therefore need to find a midfield solution rather than simply another player to occupy the same position.
The Community Shield highlighted the importance of having players capable of winning duels, controlling transitions and providing leadership when opponents increase the intensity.
Against Arsenal, City looked lightweight in the middle of the pitch and struggled to impose themselves when Mikel Arteta’s side attacked with numbers.
Defensive organisation remains a major concern
Manchester City’s problems were not limited to midfield.
Their defensive organisation was also repeatedly exposed, particularly when Arsenal attacked quickly and occupied dangerous spaces around the penalty area.
City’s high defensive line became a problem because it was not consistently supported by an aggressive and coordinated press.
That combination can be particularly dangerous in the Premier League. When a team plays a high line but fails to pressure the player on the ball, opponents are given time to identify and exploit spaces behind the defence.
Arsenal did exactly that.
The opening goals demonstrated how quickly City could be exposed when their defensive units became disconnected.
Arsenal showed the difference in attacking efficiency
One of the most striking aspects of the match was the contrast between possession and effectiveness.
Manchester City enjoyed long spells with the ball but struggled to create clear opportunities. Arsenal, meanwhile, were more decisive when they entered dangerous areas.
City reportedly had hundreds of additional passes in the opposition half, yet Arsenal created more significant opportunities.
That statistic underlined a key problem: possession means little without penetration, movement and end product.
Erling Haaland had City’s major opportunity but was unable to convert it, while Arsenal were clinical when their chances arrived.
For Maresca, improving the connection between midfield and attack will be crucial.
Enzo Fernandez remains a potential midfield solution
Manchester City are expected to remain active in the transfer market before the September 1 deadline, with Enzo Fernandez reportedly among the players linked with a move.
Fernandez would not be a direct replacement for Rodri, but he could provide some of the qualities Manchester City currently lack.
The Argentine midfielder offers energy, ball progression, creativity and a willingness to compete physically.
His previous working relationship with Maresca at Chelsea could also make him an attractive option for the manager.
However, bringing in Fernandez alone would not solve every problem exposed against Arsenal.
City need greater balance throughout midfield, particularly with Tijjani Reijnders also set to move on and younger players being asked to take on greater responsibility.
Manchester City’s squad needs better balance
The age profile of City’s midfield is another issue Maresca will have to consider.
Elliot Anderson is still only 23, while Ayyoub Bouaddi, another reported target, is just 18. Kovacic, meanwhile, is entering the latter stages of his career.
That leaves Manchester City needing to find the right combination of youth, experience, athleticism and tactical intelligence.
The Community Shield defeat suggested that this balance has not yet been achieved.
Maresca will need players capable of executing his preferred system while also adapting when matches become chaotic.
There are still reasons for Manchester City to remain optimistic
Despite the concerns, it would be premature to draw definitive conclusions from one Community Shield match.
The fixture came at the beginning of the season, and several City players had only recently returned from their post-World Cup breaks.
Haaland, Anderson and O’Reilly were among those who had limited preparation time, which could explain some of their lack of sharpness.
There is also plenty of time for Maresca to improve the team’s pressing structure, defensive positioning and midfield relationships on the training ground.
Manchester City are also unlikely to face an opponent of Arsenal’s quality every week.

Manchester City now turn their attention to the Premier League, with Bournemouth their first opponent of the new campaign.
The fixture will provide Maresca with an immediate opportunity to respond to the Community Shield defeat.
The manager will be hoping for greater defensive organisation, improved midfield control and a more effective connection between the team’s attacking players.
The transfer window also remains open until September 1, giving Manchester City an opportunity to strengthen areas that were exposed against Arsenal.
The verdict: Manchester City have work to do
The Community Shield defeat should not define Manchester City’s entire season, but it did provide Maresca with an early warning.
The 3-0 loss exposed weaknesses in midfield, defensive organisation, pressing and leadership. Rodri’s departure makes the midfield problem particularly urgent, while the team’s high defensive line will require better coordination if Maresca intends to maintain it.
The positive for Manchester City is that these problems have been identified early.
Maresca still has time to strengthen the squad, improve his tactical structure and establish better relationships between his players.
But if City genuinely want to close the gap to Arsenal, the Community Shield showed that there is plenty of work to be done.
