Thomas Tuchel has hit back at critics of his tactical decisions after England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta, insisting his substitutions weren’t to blame. Instead, the England boss argues the real issue is a deeper, long-standing weakness in how English players are conditioned to handle the ball under pressure something he’s described as a gap in the country’s footballing “DNA.”
How England Let the Semi-Final Slip
England had taken a first-half lead through Anthony Gordon and looked on course for a first World Cup final appearance since 1966. But Tuchel’s changes from the 72nd minute onward starting with Gordon’s own withdrawal for Ezri Konsa as England shifted to a back five proved costly. Argentina hit the post twice through Alexis Mac Allister before Enzo Fernandez levelled with a strike from range in the 86th minute, and Lautaro Martinez headed home a Lionel Messi cross deep into stoppage time to complete the turnaround.
By the closing stages, seven of England’s outfield players were operating in defensive-minded roles, with Reece James and Declan Rice withdrawn for Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly. Notably, Kobbie Mainoo regarded as one of England’s best options for retaining the ball in tight areas didn’t feature at all in the tournament, while Phil Foden was left out of the squad entirely.
Tuchel’s Response to the Criticism
Facing accusations that his in-game management turned the tie in Argentina’s favour, Tuchel maintained that no tactical setup would have changed the outcome given how passive and physically off the pace his side became once Argentina found their rhythm. He pointed to England failing to close down runners arriving from midfield and struggling defensively from crosses, adding that the momentum shift after conceding made it difficult to win the ball back at all.
He was also unmoved on the decision to go defensive with more than half an hour still to play while a goal ahead, explaining the intention behind the switch was for his players to press higher and quicker out to the wide areas rather than sit back even if that isn’t how it played out on the pitch.
Blaming the “DNA,” Not the Formation
Tuchel’s central explanation was that possession retention under pressure simply isn’t as embedded in English players as it is for sides like Spain, Argentina or Brazil. It’s a striking choice of language “DNA” is the same term the FA’s Chief Football Officer, Dan Ashworth, used when England unveiled its long-term development blueprint back in 2014, built around five pillars covering identity, playing style, coaching, player development and multidisciplinary support.
Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett noted there’s a fair argument that England’s players do struggle to retain possession under pressure, but pointed out the irony of Tuchel invoking a phrase the FA itself introduced 12 years ago to solve exactly that problem meaning either the development programme has failed, or the current head coach’s read on the issue is off.
Fatigue and Travel Also a Factor
Tuchel pointed to the physical toll of the tournament as well, with England having covered more distance than any other nation at this World Cup 14,365 miles across five weeks. Combined with playing in heat and altitude, and finishing the semi-final a man down, he believes the cumulative physical demands played a real part in how the game slipped away late on.
Staying On Through to 2028
Despite the exit and mounting criticism, Tuchel confirmed he remains fully committed to the England job through to the 2028 European Championships, where his contract is due to expire. He said he’s seen enough in training and across the tournament to believe there’s another level his squad can still reach, and that the belief in eventually winning a major trophy under his charge hasn’t wavered.
