Real Betis 2-5 Barcelona: Yamal Shines as Perfect Start Goes On

Real Betis 2-5 Barcelona was another statement win for Hansi Flick’s side, who made it nine wins from nine La Liga games with a thrilling victory at La Cartuja in Seville on Saturday. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring and set up a goal, while Rodri, Gabriel Jesus, Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo also found the net. Betis scored through Valentin Gomez and Abde Ezzalzouli but played the last half hour with ten men after Facundo Bernal was sent off.

The result means Barcelona have a perfect 27 points from nine league matches, matching Real Madrid’s start to the 1968/69 season, and they head towards next weekend’s El Clasico unbeaten in all competitions.

Real Betis 2-5 Barcelona: Key Facts

  • Result: Real Betis 2-5 Barcelona
  • Competition: La Liga, Matchday 9
  • Date: Saturday 17 October 2026
  • Venue: Estadio de La Cartuja, Seville
  • Barcelona goals: Yamal 10′, Rodri 41′, Gabriel Jesus 53′, Eric Garcia 63′, Olmo 80′
  • Betis goals: Valentin Gomez 28′, Abde Ezzalzouli (shortly after Jesus scored)
  • Red card: Facundo Bernal (Betis), early in the second half
  • Barcelona form: Nine wins from nine in La Liga, unbeaten in all eleven competitive games this season

First Half: Yamal Strikes, Betis Hit Back

It took Barcelona only ten minutes to go ahead. Yamal curled a superb finish into the net from outside the area. It was the kind of goal Barca fans have come to expect from the teenager.

Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis did not fold. They pushed Barcelona back and equalised in the 28th minute when Pablo Fornals delivered a cross and Valentin Gomez headed home. Betis then thought they had taken the lead before the break when Giovani Lo Celso hit a long-range volley, but VAR ruled the goal out for a handball by Cucho Hernandez in the build-up.

That decision proved costly. In the 41st minute Barcelona went back in front when Rodri rose to head in a Fermin Lopez corner, his first goal for the club.

Second Half: A Chaotic Ten Minutes

The game exploded early in the second half. Gabriel Jesus made it 1-3 in the 53rd minute, finishing after Yamal pulled the ball back following a pass from Fermin. Betis replied almost immediately through Abde Ezzalzouli to make it 2-3 and bring the home crowd back to life.

Any hopes of a comeback were then damaged when Bernal was shown a straight red card after an incident with Yamal, leaving Betis with ten men for the rest of the match.

Barcelona Pull Away

With the extra man, Barcelona took control. Eric Garcia scored the fourth in the 63rd minute after Pau Cubarsi flicked the ball on, and substitute Dani Olmo wrapped up the win with ten minutes left. Barcelona could have scored more, but five goals away from home against a side of Betis’s quality is a big message to the rest of La Liga.

Talking Points

Yamal the Difference Again

Yamal was involved in the first and third goals and caused problems every time he got on the ball. He also picked up a yellow card early in the second half, so Barca fans will hope he keeps a cool head in the big games coming up.

Fitness Watch: Raphinha and Eric Garcia

There was good news as Raphinha returned from a short injury absence and came off the bench. The concern is Eric Garcia, who left the pitch early with a possible fitness problem after scoring. The club hopes it is nothing serious, but no diagnosis had been confirmed at the time of writing. Check the official Barcelona match report for updates.

Betis Still Dangerous

Betis scored twice against Barcelona and were level until just before the break. The red card hurt them, but they showed enough going forward to suggest they will win plenty of games this season.

What Comes Next: El Clasico

Barcelona’s next La Liga match is the big one, El Clasico against Real Madrid next weekend.
