Hamilton’s Ferrari Win Forces Mercedes to Rethink Team Strategy
Lewis Hamilton’s dominant victory at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix has sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 paddock and straight into the Mercedes camp. For the first time this season, Mercedes left a race weekend without a race win, and team principal Toto Wolff has admitted the team must now hold serious internal discussions about how Kimi Antonelli and George Russell race each other going forward.

With Antonelli retiring late while running second, Hamilton sliced 41 points off the Italian’s championship lead and extended his own gap over Russell to nine points. The title fight is suddenly very much alive.
Wolff: “We Need to Recalibrate”
Speaking in the wake of the Spanish GP, Wolff acknowledged that while Mercedes has always allowed its drivers to race freely, the emergence of a genuine external threat changes the equation.
“We didn’t interfere in them fighting, because that’s how we’ve always raced,” said Wolff. “But it’s a situation we need to look into for the future how to handle a situation where there’s a pace differential if we are fighting for a victory or at the risk of losing a victory.”
“There is a third party now getting involved in the championship fight, constructor and driver. In that respect, we will discuss internally with the two drivers how we want to handle a situation where we risk holding each other up. I think it’s not going to be a problem. It’s just maybe we need to recalibrate.”
This marks a significant shift in tone from just weeks ago, when Antonelli himself said the team were comfortable letting the drivers race “each other freely as long as there’s respect” a policy that led to dramatic wheel-to-wheel battles and near-collisions at both the Canadian Grand Prix Sprint and race.
The Antonelli-Russell Rivalry: From Canada to Barcelona
The intra-Mercedes tension has been building across multiple race weekends. In Canada, the two drivers went side-by-side and almost collided on two separate occasions across the Sprint and main race, before Russell retired from the lead race that ended in controversy and underlined the fragility of the team’s strong early-season results.
In Barcelona, the pair once again duelled for position, this time at the front of the field only for their battle to cost both of them track position and ultimately gift Hamilton his historic moment. Reliability has also been a mounting concern for Mercedes, with Antonelli’s DNF in Spain following Russell’s retirement in Canada.
“If He Smells Blood, He Goes” — Wolff’s Warning About Hamilton
Few people understand Lewis Hamilton’s competitive instincts better than Toto Wolff. The Austrian was Mercedes team principal throughout six of Hamilton’s seven world championship victories, and his assessment of the Briton’s current momentum is striking.
“I’d rather not fight with him for a title because I know what he’s capable of,” Wolff said. “If he smells blood, he goes for it. I’ve seen it many years where suddenly the Lewis Hamilton train started to go and then it’s very difficult to stop it.”
Hamilton’s run of form — back-to-back second-place finishes followed by a race win has transformed the 2026 title narrative. What began as a two-horse Mercedes intra-team battle is now a genuine three-way fight, with Ferrari threatening on both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship fronts. Charles Leclerc, too, remains a factor.
Villeneuve: “We’ll See What Russell and Antonelli Are Really Made Of”
1997 Formula 1 World Champion and Sky Sports F1 pundit Jacques Villeneuve offered a sharp assessment of how the evolving title race will test the two Mercedes drivers in a new way.
“We thought it would be an intra-team title battle,” Villeneuve said on The F1 Show podcast. “Ferrari was there but behind and never close enough to give Mercedes a hard time. But now it looks like Ferrari, mainly with Lewis but Leclerc will be in the fight as well, they will give a hard time to Mercedes.”
“That will put Mercedes under pressure and their drivers under pressure. Then we will really see what Russell and Antonelli are made of when the driver they are fighting against is not their team-mate. You don’t have the data, you don’t know what’s happening at the other team. That creates a different kind of stress.”
Villeneuve’s point is an important one fighting a team-mate brings the comfort of shared data and known quantities. Fighting Hamilton and Ferrari, with no visibility into their strategy or setup, is an entirely different psychological battle.
