Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, securing their first win of the season and bouncing back from the opening-weekend defeat to Hull City. It looked like being a difficult afternoon for Michael Carrick’s side early on, but United’s response led by their captain ultimately proved emphatic.
A Nervy Start Turns Into a Rout
Ipswich took an early lead through Leif Davis, who finished high into the net after Abdul Fatawu skinned Luke Shaw down the flank, with Julio Enciso and Daizen Maeda having already tested Senne Lammens earlier in the half. With United having lost their opener to Hull the previous weekend, there was a genuinely edgy atmosphere inside Old Trafford at that point.
The turning point came when Marcelino Nunez slipped, allowing Matheus Cunha to dispossess the Ipswich midfielder and set up Fernandes, who levelled with a firm left-footed finish just before half-time. Bryan Mbeumo should have completed the turnaround early in the second half but struck the crossbar from close range. United didn’t have to wait long for their second, however, which came in controversial fashion Harry Maguire’s effort deflected in off Jacob Greaves for what was eventually allowed to stand as an own goal, despite the ball having initially been diverted via a Maguire handball on its way through.
United Take Control
Greaves’ difficult afternoon continued shortly after, fouling Cunha when the Brazilian was clean through on goal, giving away a penalty that Fernandes converted having missed two spot-kicks during pre-season. Fernandes completed his hat-trick with a composed finish in the 68th minute, before turning provider late on, threading a pass in behind for Mbeumo to lob the goalkeeper and make it 5-1. Ipswich did pull a stoppage-time consolation back through substitute Chuba Akpom, but it did little to change the complexion of a game United had long since put to bed.
With academy graduates Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford both back in the starting line-up the latter making his first appearance for the club since 2024 there was a genuine sense of optimism around Old Trafford by full-time.
Explaining the Contentious Second Goal
The IFAB handball rule played a direct role in United’s second goal being allowed to stand. Under the laws of the game, a goal is disallowed if a player scores directly from their own hand or arm, even accidentally but if the ball is clearly heading wide before being touched by a defending player, resulting in an own goal, the goal is permitted to stand. That distinction meant Maguire’s deflected effort, redirected in off Greaves, was correctly awarded despite the earlier handball contact.
Fernandes Continues to Deliver
Co-commentating for Sky Sports, Gary Neville was emphatic in his praise for Fernandes, describing him without hesitation as United’s best signing of the post-Ferguson era a claim he suggested needs no real caveat given the scale of Fernandes’ overall impact at the club. Neville noted the timing of this performance, coming shortly after Fernandes swept last season’s individual awards, including the PFA Players’ Player of the Year alongside the FWA prize, as a timely reminder of his standing as arguably the best player currently in the Premier League.
Neville highlighted not just the three goals and an assist, but the mentality Fernandes consistently brings when United need him most pointing out, almost as an aside, that Fernandes appeared visibly frustrated with himself in the 89th minute after an outside-of-the-boot cross failed to find its target, and suggesting that had an earlier outrageous long-range attempt from inside the centre circle gone in, this would have gone down as one of the truly great individual displays. As it stands, Fernandes simply had to settle for being the match-winner once again.
Carrick: “We Haven’t Cracked It”
Speaking to Sky Sports afterward, Michael Carrick welcomed the result while praising the quality shown through the middle of the pitch from Tielemans, Mainoo and Cunha in particular, and credited Fernandes for bouncing back strongly after a difficult opening weekend, on the back of a big week of individual recognition. Carrick was careful not to overreact to either the earlier defeat or this win, stressing that last week’s result wasn’t as bad as it looked and that today’s performance, while pleasing, still leaves room for further improvement. He was clear the squad remains a work in progress, with plenty still to build on heading into the following week.
O’Neil: “We Lost Control of the Momentum”
Ipswich boss Gary O’Neil accepted that beating United at Old Trafford requires key moments to fall your way, and felt several went against his side on this occasion. He pointed to his team’s inability to regain control during the final half-hour as the key area for improvement, acknowledging that factors like refereeing decisions, deflections and slips are simply part of football but stressed that how his side responds to those moments going forward is what ultimately needs to get better.
