Arsenal have agreed a £51 million deal to sign Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, addressing a pressing need at the back with William Saliba out for an extended period and Jurrien Timber also sidelined by a long-term groin issue. A Deal That Took the Whole Summer
Arsenal’s interest in Konsa has run throughout the transfer window, with Villa initially valuing him at £60 million a figure Arsenal weren’t prepared to meet before an agreement was eventually reached at a lower fee. Sky Sports’ Sam Blitz notes that Mikel Arteta has a well-known preference for defenders who win individual battles, and few did that better than Konsa last season the England international won more ground duels than any other Premier League player, finishing comfortably ahead of Virgil van Dijk and his soon-to-be Arsenal team-mate Gabriel.
With both Saliba and Timber unavailable, Arsenal specifically need a player capable of covering both centre-back and right-back, and Konsa fits that requirement. Speaking at a Premier League launch event ahead of Friday’s opener against Coventry, Arteta reaffirmed the scale of Arsenal’s ambitions, saying it’s the clear goal of both the club and its owners to become the best in the world something he believes requires excellence across facilities, stadium, supporters and squad alike, with top-level players ultimately the difference-makers in matches that matter most. He framed Arsenal’s ongoing transfer business, including their pursuit of players like Konsa, as part of that broader project.
