Tottenham 3-1 Coventry: Maddison Ends Spurs’ Winless Start

Tottenham finally have a Premier League win. Spurs beat Coventry City 3-1 on Monday night, and Tottenham 3-1 Coventry was a result Spurs badly needed, with James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and substitute Ben Davies scoring after Jack Rudoni had briefly levelled for the visitors. The result lifts Roberto De Zerbi’s side out of the relegation zone and up to 16th, one place above Frank Lampard’s Coventry on goal difference.

It was also a night of comebacks. Maddison scored against the club where he came through the academy, and Dejan Kulusevski made his first appearance since May 2025 after a long knee problem.

Tottenham 3-1 Coventry: Key Facts

  • Result: Tottenham 3-1 Coventry City
  • Date: Monday 19 October 2026
  • Kick-off: 22:00 EAT (20:00 UK time)
  • Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London
  • Competition: Premier League, Matchweek 7
  • Referee: Andy Madley
  • Scorers: Maddison 14′, Marmoush 58′, Davies 90+6′ (Spurs); Rudoni 49′ (Coventry)
  • Form before kick-off: Spurs were bottom and winless after six league games (three draws, three defeats). Coventry arrived after a 4-1 win over Newcastle.

How the Match Unfolded

De Zerbi made five changes, handing starts to Maddison, Marmoush, Andy Robertson, Micky van de Ven and Tosin Adarabioyo. Spurs dominated the ball from the start and ended the night with roughly two thirds of possession, although Coventry were dangerous early, with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto seeing a close-range effort deflected over.

The breakthrough came on 14 minutes. Maddison, making his first competitive start for Spurs since May 2025, picked his spot from the edge of the area and curled the ball into the net. For a player who grew up in Coventry’s academy, the goal carried extra meaning, and he looked sharp all evening.

Coventry hit back four minutes after the restart. Brandon Thomas-Asante was involved in the move and Rudoni reacted first after Spurs failed to deal with the danger, finishing from close range to make it 1-1 on 49 minutes.

Marmoush Restores the Lead

The equaliser lasted less than ten minutes. On 58 minutes Marmoush turned Milan van Ewijk and fired past Carl Rushworth for his first goal in a Spurs shirt. Coventry protested that Marmoush had caught van Ewijk with his arm while turning, but the goal stood after a VAR check.

Lampard’s side kept pushing and had spells of pressure late on, but they managed only one shot on target all night, the Rudoni goal. Spurs finished with 16 shots and five on target against Coventry’s 12 and one.

Davies Seals It, Kulusevski Returns

The loudest cheer before the final goal was saved for Kulusevski, who came off the bench late on for his first appearance since May 2025. Then, six minutes into stoppage time, fellow substitute Ben Davies struck from the edge of the box to make it 3-1 and settle any nerves around the stadium.

What It Means for Both Managers

For De Zerbi, this was a badly needed result. Spurs had gone six league games without a win and started the night at the foot of the table. According to reports in England, the Italian admitted afterwards that he was happier with the points than the performance, feeling his side lacked intensity against a well organised Coventry low block. He will still take encouragement from Maddison and Kulusevski both being back. For more on how Spurs have struggled to turn draws into wins this term, see our Man Utd 1-1 Tottenham report.

There are fresh concerns, though. Robertson and Adarabioyo both went off injured in the second half. De Zerbi reportedly played the problems down, but their fitness will be worth watching before the weekend.

Lampard will feel his side deserved more. Coventry came into the game full of confidence after their 4-1 win over Newcastle, and reports suggest he believed his players were very good in the first half and competitive throughout. Goalkeeper Rushworth endured a tough night, and the late third goal flattered Spurs slightly on the balance of chances.
