Tottenham have officially confirmed the signing of winger Savio from Manchester City in an £85 million deal, with an initial £75 million payment plus up to £10 million in add-ons around £5 million of which is understood to be effectively guaranteed, meaning City could receive at least £80 million overall. The Brazilian, previously known as Savinho during his time at City, will wear the No.17 shirt at Tottenham.
A Long-Awaited Deal
Spurs had tried and failed to sign the winger last summer, making this a genuinely long-term target finally landed. His arrival takes Tottenham’s spending this window past £300 million, following the earlier signings of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke for a combined £237 million, alongside free transfer additions Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi.
For Manchester City, the sale represents a club-record fee received, surpassing the £82 million City banked for Julian Alvarez’s move to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024.
Savio and De Zerbi’s Reaction
In a statement released by Tottenham, Savio said the move had taken time to come together but that he was delighted to finally be at the club, describing it as a fantastic opportunity working under one of the best coaches in the world. He said his conversation with head coach Roberto De Zerbi convinced him immediately, with De Zerbi expressing a shared belief they can help each other reach the highest level.
De Zerbi welcomed his new signing warmly, praising Savio’s energy, imagination and quality in wide areas, along with his willingness to take on defenders directly and his ability to change games through creativity. He said he’s looking forward to working with Savio and helping him continue developing as a player, while giving him the platform to express his personality on the pitch.
Marmoush Could Be Next Out of City
With Savio’s move now complete, attention has turned to a separate deal that could see Tottenham also sign Omar Marmoush from Manchester City, with talks reported to be advanced and progressing well, and Marmoush himself understood to be open to the move. City head coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed Jeremy Doku is currently dealing with an injury, meaning City are already light on attacking options even before any potential Marmoush departure. Marmoush was an unused substitute in City’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League opener, though he did feature for 37 minutes off the bench during the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal.
Spurs Now the League’s Biggest Overspenders
According to Sky Sports data comparing transfer fees against player valuations on Transfermarkt, Tottenham have now overspent on signings by nearly £130 million this summer following the Savio deal more than any other Premier League club. That figure includes £100 million spent on Sandro Tonali, £85 million on Mateus Fernandes, and £52 million on Jan Paul van Hecke, all valued below their transfer fees according to the analysis.
Even when free transfer signings Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka are factored in to bring the average down, Tottenham’s overspending still sits at roughly £101.7 million. Savio himself is identified as the single most overpaid player of the entire transfer window so far, signed at around £55 million above his estimated market value with the three most significant instances of overspending across the whole Premier League all involving Tottenham signings: Tonali, Fernandes and Savio.
