Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games: A Historic Opening
The opening ceremony took place at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, just outside Dakar. It was a proud night for Senegal and for the whole continent, which has waited a long time to host an Olympic event. The cauldron was lit by two Senegalese athletes, fencer Abdourahmane Marieme Sy and judoka Aicha Diop.
The ceremony also featured another first, with a Refugee Youth Olympic Team marching in the parade of athletes for the first time. Young athletes from around the world will compete in 35 disciplines over the next two weeks.

- 3×3 basketball

What Are the Youth Olympic Games?
The Youth Olympic Games are an international multi-sport event for athletes aged roughly 15 to 18, organised by the International Olympic Committee. They mix traditional Olympic sports with newer, youth-focused formats such as 3×3 basketball and Baseball5, and they act as a stepping stone for many future Olympians.
Why Dakar 2026 Matters for Kenya
For a country best known for its distance runners, a team spread over 13 disciplines is a sign that Kenyan sport is becoming more diverse. Athletics will still be where many fans look first for medals, but the presence of rugby sevens, beach handball, fencing and Baseball5 athletes shows how many young Kenyans are now competing at international level in other sports.
Hosting in Africa also helps. Shorter travel, a familiar climate and strong support from fans across the continent should give Kenyan athletes every chance to perform. For many of these teenagers, Dakar could be the first step towards senior national teams, Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.
It is a big week for Kenyan sport all round.
