PSG 2-0 Lyon was the final score at the Parc des Princes on Monday night, as two substitutes changed a tight Ligue 1 game in the final 20 minutes. Senny Mayulu broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute and Mika Godts sealed it in the 84th, sending Paris Saint-Germain back to the top of the table, one point clear of Rennes. It was PSG’s eighth straight win in all competitions, despite a growing injury list.

How the Match Unfolded

This was not a comfortable night for PSG for long spells. Before kick-off, the two teams were level on 14 points, and Lyon came to Paris with a clear plan to stay compact and break quickly.

The visitors carried a real threat in the first half. Julien Duranville and Zachary Athekame both forced good saves from PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov in the first half, and on another night Lyon could have gone in ahead at the break.

PSG had plenty of the ball but struggled to turn possession into clear openings. Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif was busy, and the home side’s finishing let them down, with several efforts flying wide of the target. It was the kind of game that looked set for a goalless draw until Luis Enrique turned to his bench.

Mayulu Breaks the Deadlock

Both Mayulu and Godts came on in the second half, and the change in energy was obvious. In the 72nd minute, Godts worked the ball into Mayulu on the edge of the area and the young midfielder drove a powerful low shot into the bottom corner.

Godts Finishes It Off

With six minutes left, Quentin Ndjantou played a ball over the top for Godts, who ran clear and finished to make it 2-0. Having set up the first goal, Godts capped an excellent impact off the bench by scoring the second, and Lyon had no way back.

Talking Points

PSG’s depth is the difference

The most impressive part of this win was who PSG were missing. Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were both unavailable after getting hurt in last week’s 4-2 Champions League win over Barcelona, with Kvaratskhelia facing a long spell out after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. Captain Marquinhos was also missing. Even so, Luis Enrique’s substitutes decided the game, which says a lot about the strength of this squad.

Lyon can take positives

Lyon will be disappointed to leave with nothing after a strong first half. They stayed organised, carried a threat on the break and tested Safonov more than once. The problem was the final 20 minutes, when tired legs and PSG’s fresh attackers made the difference. They stay fifth and only three points behind the leaders, so the title race in France is still very open.

A tight Ligue 1 title race

PSG’s win takes them above Rennes into first place. The top of Ligue 1 is crowded this season, and with so many clubs separated by a few points, every result matters.
