Djed Spence has completed a £30 million move to Inter Milan from Tottenham, with the deal including a 10 per cent sell-on clause for Spurs. The England full-back travelled to Italy on Friday to undergo a medical as the finer details of the transfer were finalised, bringing an end to a four-year spell in north London.

Why Spence Was Available

Despite starring for England during their third-place finish at this summer’s World Cup, Spence looked set for limited opportunities at Tottenham this coming season, with Pedro Porro established as first-choice right-back and a crowded left-back options list including Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Souza and Ben Davies. Inter, meanwhile, had been searching for a new right-wing-back option and turned their attention to Spence after being unable to complete a deal for Al Ittihad’s Moussa Diaby.

Contract Situation and Italian Connection

Spence still had three years left on his Tottenham contract, plus a club option for a further year, but was reportedly keen on the move having enjoyed a productive six-month loan spell with Genoa in Italy back in early 2024. Spurs originally signed Spence from Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £20 million in July 2022.

Spence’s Farewell Message

Spence posted a farewell message on social media reflecting on his time at the club, describing it as a special chapter now coming to an end and thanking the staff, team-mates and supporters who shaped his experience at Tottenham. He signed off by saying Spurs will always hold a place in his heart as he begins a new chapter in Italy.

Why Spurs Decided to Sell

Sky Sports News’ Mark McAdam noted that Spence is a player Tottenham fans have seen produce moments of real brilliance, pointing to his standout performances for England at the World Cup as evidence of his ceiling. McAdam acknowledged some fans may view the £30 million fee as underwhelming for a player of that potential, though he noted it still represents more than double the roughly £12.5 million Spurs paid Middlesbrough for him back in 2022. He added that Tottenham have been planning for this departure for some time and already have potential replacements in mind.
