Liverpool Agree Surprise Season-Long Loan for Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo

Liverpool have struck a surprise deal to bring in Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan, adding much-needed depth at centre-back after a summer that has left Andoni Iraola short of senior options in that position. The 27-year-old, who signed a new Barcelona contract running until 2031 last year, will join with an option to buy worth around £47.14 million (€55m) attached to the loan.

Why Liverpool Needed Reinforcements

Araujo’s arrival addresses a growing problem at the back for Liverpool, following Ibrahima Konate’s departure to Real Madrid and ongoing fitness question marks around 21-year-old summer signing Jeremy Jacquet. Jacquet, who joined from Rennes, has made fewer than 100 senior career appearances and is yet to feature in pre-season after missing the second half of last season recovering from shoulder surgery.

The situation was compounded further when Joe Gomez suffered a muscle injury in Liverpool’s opening pre-season fixture, while teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni continues his own recovery from an ACL injury. That combination has left captain Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool’s only fully fit senior centre-back heading into the new campaign making Araujo’s arrival a timely boost.

A Versatile Option for Iraola

While Araujo operates primarily as a central defender, he’s also capable of covering at right-back, giving Liverpool useful flexibility across two positions currently affected by injuries. He’s set to travel to the UK on Sunday to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of his temporary move.

Araujo’s Barcelona Story

Araujo joined Barcelona from his native Uruguay in 2018, initially with the club’s B team before being promoted to the first team the following year, and has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the Catalan giants. He was named one of Barcelona’s captains following Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s departure in January, though his game time was limited last season starting just 11 LaLiga matches after taking an extended break from football in November 2025, during which he later revealed he had been dealing with depression.

Barcola Deal Still Stuck

Liverpool have also held preliminary discussions with Paris Saint-Germain over a potential move for winger Bradley Barcola, though a significant gap remains between the two clubs’ valuations. PSG are said to value the 23-year-old at around £145 million, a figure that continues to make any deal difficult to progress at this stage.

Quick Facts: Araujo to Liverpool

  • Deal type: Season-long loan with option to buy (~£47.14m / €55m)
  • Barcelona contract: Signed new deal to 2031 (2025)
  • Barcelona appearances: 200+ since 2018/2019
  • Liverpool’s centre-back situation: Van Dijk only fully fit senior option before Araujo’s arrival
  • Also capable of playing: Right-back
  • Separate ongoing pursuit: Bradley Barcola (valuation gap with PSG, ~£145m)
