Elliot Anderson Joins Man City in Record £116m British Transfer

Manchester City have announced the record-breaking £116m signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. The deal makes the 23-year-old midfielder the most expensive British player in history, edging past the £115m Real Madrid paid Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham in the summer of 2023. Here is the full breakdown: the fee, where it ranks, why City rate him so highly, and what it means for their midfield.

A new British transfer record

Anderson’s move sets a fresh benchmark for a British footballer. In overall Premier League history, only Liverpool’s £125m outlay on Alexander Isak and £116.5m deal for Florian Wirtz last summer rank as more expensive incoming transfers.

Medical completed mid-World Cup

Anderson was granted clearance by England to complete his Manchester City medical on Sunday, slotting it between World Cup fixtures. He has started all four of the Three Lions’ games so far in the tournament, having quickly established himself as one of Europe’s standout midfielders.

In a statement, City confirmed the two clubs had reached an agreement, adding that Anderson – currently competing at the World Cup – had completed a medical in Kansas, with the formalities to be finalised on his return to England. The club wished Anderson and the England squad well for the rest of their campaign and said they looked forward to welcoming him to Manchester in due course.

Anderson chose City over United

The midfielder picked Manchester City ahead of Manchester United and other interested clubs. Forest were willing to sell to either Manchester side, so the decision ultimately came down to the player – and he chose City. He becomes the first signing under new manager Enzo Maresca, confirmed as Pep Guardiola’s successor earlier this week.

Anderson featured in every Premier League game for Forest last season, making 37 starts, scoring four goals and providing four assists. Crucially, he ranked among the league’s top five for both tackles and passes – a rare combination that underlines his all-round game.

Why Man City see Anderson as an ideal fit

Analysts believe Anderson will slot seamlessly into Maresca’s system – and, in truth, into almost any manager’s, thanks to his versatility. He can operate as a single pivot or, as seen at the World Cup, alongside a player like Declan Rice.

His profile is that of an all-action midfielder: he breaks lines, presses, wins duels and chips in with goals, including one against City themselves last season. That flexibility looks especially valuable given Bernardo Silva’s departure this summer and the continued uncertainty over Rodri, who has said he will resolve his future after the World Cup and enters next season with a year left on his contract. With no guarantee Rodri signs an extension, Anderson is viewed as a player capable of featuring alongside or in place of him – exactly the kind of reinvigoration City’s midfield needs.

Better than Rice and Rodri? Justifying the price tag

The only real point of debate around Anderson is the fee. His profile as a complete all-round midfielder is hard to dispute, and against others in the same price bracket the argument is that City have signed the very best available.

Beyond the eye test – which highlights how efficiently he covers ground and how composed he is in possession – his off-the-ball work draws particularly strong praise. Some go as far as to rate his defensive contribution above Declan Rice’s, and even more efficient than the present-day version of Rodri. At 23, with his prime still ahead of him, that ceiling is a big part of why City were willing to break the British record.
